I found this old Bonhams catalogue from 1999 on eBay recently, and it’s got a good selection of costumes and props from a range of eras of Doctor Who.

There are some amazing costumes listed in this sale, many of which haven’t seen the light of day since. It would be amazing to know where they are!

Bonhams FLASHBACK: 2nd September 1993 Entertainment sale

I came across this vintage Bonhams catalogue dating from 1993.

In my research into sales of Doctor Who costumes and memorabilia at historical Bonhams auctions, I don’t think I’ve seen quite so many Who-related items in a general sale before - 75 items in total, most of which are costume.

Catalogues in those days were sparsely written, often containing typing errors and misattributions. Hence you will see Sontarin (not Sontaran) and Androzanni (instead of Androzani).
Other instances cite the wrong episode titles; wrong seasons; and occasional wrong aliens!

I have therefore NOT attempted to correct any of these as it is not always possible to fathom the ambiguous nature of some of the listings.

Where possible I have used the (few) photos from the catalogue to illustrate the items, but most I have sourced images from either episodes cited, or later Bonhams auctions where it would appear these items resurfaced for sale.

Last week I showed you the content of a Bonhams sale from January 1992. In it a large number of ex-BBC Costume Dept outfits from Doctor Who were sold off.

monsters.

Doctor Who/ Patrick Troughton - The Web of Fear: an original prop yeti homing device, BBC, 1968, the hollow figure of stained mixed media resin, mounted on a base, accompanied by a black and white still [printed later] from the film showing the vendor in costume as a yeti, height - 11.5cm (4¾in).

FOOTNOTES
The vendor acted on Doctor Who for many years in different roles, including as a yeti in the Web of Fear and was given this prop after filming had ended.

I spotted this original Doctor Who scripts on eBay this month.

They are being sold on behalf of the author, Victor Pemberton, so they have some interesting provenance.

This is an original first draft episode one rehearsal script from the BBC Television programme "Doctor Who".

This script is from 1968 for DOCTOR WHO AND THE COLONY OF DEVILS which was the working title of FURY FROM THE DEEP starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor.

The butterfly clip is a little rusty, and some of the outer pages have become slightly discoloured with time but bear in mind the scripts are 47 year old.

Can’t believe 2014 is nearly over - so to confirm its immenant demise Bonhams are holding their usual December Entertainment Memorabilia sale.

Must say I’m a little puzzled by this item in the catalogue.

If the photograph is to be gone by, it sold in last year’s December 2013 Bonhams sale for an eye-watering £6,250. Curious to see it’s back up for sale for a mere £2,000 to £3,000.

Doctor Who - The Seeds Of Death: A bespoke shirt made for Frazer Hines as the character Jamie McCrimmon, BBC, 1969, the black shirt with three quarter length sleeves with ties to cuffs and neck, made by costume designer Bobbi Bartlett, accompanied by a document from Frazer Hines concerning the provenance.

FOOTNOTES
The character Jamie McCrimmon normally wore a khaki shirt along with a kilt during his senes in Doctor Who. However this shirt was made for Frazer Hines to add some variety to his character's wardrobe and is the only one that was produced. It has remained in Hines' collection ever since.

Henry Lincoln (born Henry Soskin) is an English author, famed for his co-authorship of the book 'The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail'.
'The Dominators' was broadcast as five episodes during August - September 1968. Henry Lincoln and Mervyn Haisman requested their writing credit for this series of episodes to be removed, due to their dissatisfaction with the eventual production, the reduction in the number of episodes (from five to six), the ending being written without consultation and the licensing agreement for the 'Quarks' characters.
The episode is therefore credited as 'Norman Ashby'.'The Dominators' was the final series of episodes written for Doctor Who by the pair.
